Sashimi

Sashimi is raw fish or other sea creature served with no rice, and the fish is usually more expensive than the fish used for nigiri, maki, and handrolls. The fish is more expensive because it is fresher, but if it is tuna sashimi it is because one is eating the tuna belly. The belly of tuna is softer and seems to melt in your mouth, and there is less of the belly compared to the body of the tuna. Octopus, horse mackerel, scallop, sea urchin, shrimp, squid, yellowtail, and salmon are the most common types of sashimi. No matter what kind of sashimi it is, chances are that it is one of the most expensive items on the menu.

Temaki

Temaki sushi is a hand rolled sushi, and it is seaweed wrapped around rice and various fillings to form a cone. At most restaurants, they will be called hand rolls. Hand rolls can be filled with anything, but it always contains rice. Unlike other types of sushi, temaki is usually eaten with one's bare hands instead of chopsticks because of its size and shape. Hand rolls are usually filled with salmon, tuna, imitation crab, tempura soft shell crab, eel, cucumber, avacado, pickled radish, spicy salmon, spicy tuna, tofu, and egg.

Maki

Maki is another common type of sushi, and is basically a roll of sushi, seaweed, and different types of fillings. Hosomaki is the thinnest type of maki sushi and usually contains one filling. Typical fillings are cucumber, avacado, tuna, and salmon. One order usually contains six pieces of the same filling.

Futomaki is a thicker type of maki that contains multiple fillings. This type of maki is usually filled with a combination of cucumber, avacado, raw fish, eel, pickled radish, fried egg, tempura shrimp, tempura soft shell crab, and carrots. Tempura means that something is battered and then deep fried. An order of futomaki either comes with three or four pieces of sushi.

Sushi

I have started working for the first time, and luckily for me, I'm surrounded by one of my favorite foods: Sushi! My blog will cover the different kinds of sushi there are, as well as other foods typically found at sushi restaurants.

Sushi is a type of Japanese cuisine, consisting of rice, vegetables, and fish. The rice used in sushi has been mixed with rice-wine vinegar, and is a bit stickier than plain rice. While the vegetables are typically raw, the fish is either raw or cooked.

The most common type of sushi is nigiri. Nigiri typically comes in pairs, and is two hand formed clumps of rice with raw fish on top. While it is normally topped with raw fish, nigiri may also be topped with tamago (egg) or a stick of imitation crab. Nigiri that is not topped with raw fish usually has a band of nori, seaweed, across the top in order to bind the topping to the rice.

Tuna, red snapper, squid, salmon, unagi (eel), and seared salmon (half cooked salmon that has been lightly torched on top) are the most typical nigiri toppings.
